About the Cardiff & District Law Society
The Cardiff & District
Law Society is a local body representing the interests of members of the
Solicitors' profession.
History
The Society was founded in
1886. The subscribers to the Memorandum of Association were a group of some of
the city's best known: Mr G F Hill, Mr Walter Scott, Mr J W Morris, Mr Harry
Cousins, Mr William Jones, Mr John Stuart Corbett and Mr Bernard Watson King -
all sole
practitioners. The Cardiff & District Law Society was incorporated as a company
limited by guarantee. The Society represents the Greater Cardiff area including
Barry and Penarth. The Society is a member of the Confederation of South Wales
Law Societies and the Associated Law Societies of Wales.
Historically and traditionally, the Society has existed to look after the interests of the profession in the area. This has been achieved through the work of a number of Committees; the Court Users Committee, the Conveyancing sub-Committee, the Criminal Committee, the IT Committee and the European Committee.
Today
The Society is consulted from time to time by the Law Society of England and Wales in relation to disciplinary matters. These, being the subject of a full debate, and the Societyıs'views have been heard on applications to rejoin the Roll and permission to re-employ solicitors struck off the Roll. Just as commerce has to look for new markets, the Society must seek new challenges and look outwards rather than become too self absorbed.
Cardif Law Society is a local body representing the interests of members of the Solicitor's profession. CDLS has over 950 members in the Greater Cardiff area including Barry and Penarth. The Society is a member of the Confederation of South Wales Law Societies and the Associated Law Societies of Wales. It is not a local branch of the Law Society of England and Wales (the statutory body reponsible for regulating the Solicitors profession) and thus does not have any formal authority or jurisdiction over local Solicitors or their firms.
