About the Cardiff & District Law Society

The Cardiff & District Law Society is a local body representing the interests of members of the Solicitors' profession.

History

The Society was founded in 1886. The subscribers to the Memorandum of Association were a group of some of the city's best known: Mr G F Hill, Mr Walter Scott, Mr J W Morris, Mr Harry Cousins, Mr William Jones, Mr John Stuart Corbett and Mr Bernard Watson King - all sole practitioners. The Cardiff & District Law Society was incorporated as a company limited by guarantee. Click here to view the Society's Memorandum and Articles of Association.

Historically and traditionally, the Society has existed to look after the interests of the profession in the area. This has been achieved through the work of a number of Committees; the Court Users Committee, the Conveyancing sub-Committee, the Criminal Committee, the IT Committee and the European Committee.

Today

Cardiff Law Society is a local body representing the interests of local solicitors and, in a significant extension to its original remit, all those involved in legal service provision in the society's membership area. CDLS has members in the greater Cardiff area including Barry and Penarth. The Society is a member of the Confederation of South Wales Law Societies and the Associated Law Societies of Wales.

CDLS is not a local branch of the Law Society of England and Wales (the statutory body reponsible for representation of Solicitors in England and Wales) nor is it in any way associated with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (the statutory body responsible for the regulation of Solicitors in England and Wales). Consequently, CDLS does not have any formal authority or jurisdiction over local Solicitors or their firms. CDLS is nonetheless consulted from time to time by the Law Society of England and Wales and SRA in relation to disciplinary matters including applications to rejoin the Roll and permission to re-employ solicitors struck off the Roll.

Cardiff & District Law Society is open to anyone working in legal services in the Cardiff Area.
